Morocco has some of the best roads in the world. If you are bored and frustrated with driving in Europe (and the UK must surely be a low point), Morocco is a fabulous tonic. Passes cross the High Atlas at over 2,000 metres, throwing in hairpin bends and spectacular views. Follow the coast road south, enjoying a cool breeze off the Atlantic even in summer.

There is potential for classic car tours, rallies and reliability tests, simple tourism, and a vast network of unsurfaced routes in the High Atlas and Sahara for those wishing to get off the beaten track and into adventures. Driving in Morocco

The Moroccan road system has been totally overhauled in the last decade. Traffic is light except around Casablanca and Rabat, and drivers are generally easy going.

The scenery needs no explanation. We have everything from mountain passes that rival the Alps, to desert highways running to infinity point on the horizon.

There is a substantial police presence, but the police are tolerant and friendly.

Speed limits are 120kph on the autoroutes, 100kph on the Routes Nationales, and from 80kph down to 40kph in built up or dangerous areas. Some autoroutes have tolls in place, but these are very reasonable.

Compared to driving in Europe, the empty roads, excellent weather and reasonable fuel prices are a dream.

 Reaching Morocco

The main point of entry is via Tangers. Ferries run from Algerciras and Tarifa in Spain. It’s a short crossing, with the fast ferries taking only 45 minutes.

Fuel Prices and Availability

Lead free petrol is of 95 octane rating and costs around 10.30dhs per litre - 0.93 euros, or £0.79 per litre.

Octane boosters are available if your car needs 98 octane fuel.

Garages are widespread, with self service an unknown concept! They also open very long hours, with major stations being 24 hour.

This is a very sound property, with unusually extensive accommodation and offering the potential for a straight forward restoration.

There are no less than six main salons, arranged over three floors. In addition, there are a plethora of other smaller rooms, ideal as dressing rooms, en suite bathrooms etc. A spacious kitchen and marble tiled courtyard with an elaborate fountain complete the property.

It’s quietly located in an excellent part of the medina, a short walk from parking at R’Cif.

Land in this river valley is very fertile. The property has frontage to a small river and includes several .

Bearing in mind it’s position, this parcel of land may have commercial potential, subject to the usual permissions.

It’s around 140 square metres, with a courtyard surrounded by pillars and balonys. Although the house is in a neglected state, the original zillage tiling is weathered but largely intact. Some beautiful plasterwork is still slinging bravely on, and the cedarwood ceilings retain some of their painted decoration.

There are four salons, plus the possibility of building a minzah on the terrace.

The house is tucked away in an old part of the medina, ten minutes walk from parking at R’Cif, fifteen minutes from Bab Jdid and not far from the Mokri Palace.

Despite this there is a beautiful entrance gate with arch, and the interior has a two floors with a gallery arranged giving access to the top floor.

This really is unusual. Possibly once part of a vast adjoining property, this riad has decoration and features, along with remarkably well proportioned rooms, usually found only in a palace.

The property has a generous, L shaped garden, with white marble tiles over part of the surface; doubtless the courtyards were once the cloistered gardens.

We understand the surface area of the plot is in excess of 300 square metres. The accommodation includes a magnificent first floor salon, with elaborate stucoe, Iraqi stained glass windows, and a beautiful cedar wood ceiling; the proportions of this room are excellent, probably close to the classical ideal of a ‘double cube’.

Access to the first floor is from a staircase within a separate ‘tower’. This could be easily extended to the terrace (access is currently via a ladder).

The ground floor has a large double height room, into which a modern mezzanine floor with an air conditioned room has been inserted. This room was possibly once the kitchen. A gallery leads to a further, lower, roof terrace. An extension houses the current kitchen.

There are two large ground floor bedrooms, making a total of three with the mezzanine.

This house deserves an imaginative restoration. There is ample space for a pool, and really generous accommodation and space.

The price is remarkably reasonable.

This smaller house has a footprint, we understand, of about 130 square metres.

It is well positioned in an excellent area, close to the reknowned Palais Jamai hotel.

Parking is 5 minutes away at Bab el Guissa and there are excellent views from the terrace, as normal in this elevated part of the medina.

There are six salons arranged around a central courtyard.

This does, however, give the new owner a very free hand when renovating the house. Considering it’s size and position (5 minutes from parking) the building undoubtedly has commercial potential.

There are currently 7 main salons, and there is a second, much smaller courtyard associated with the kitchen.

We are currently managing the restoration of this extremely pretty house. The owners intention is to sell the property once the structural renovations are complete.
